Thief Ants
- Size
- 1.3mm to 2mm long (1/20th of an inch to 1/16 of an inch)
- Color
- Pale yellow, or light-to-dark brown
- Locations
- Eating Preferences
- Sweets
- Proteins
- Oils
- Seeds
- Insects
- Stinger
- Yes - but rarely used and not very effective
- Antennae
- First segment of antennae is only about half the size of the head
- Queen
- Multiple 5mm long queens per colony
- Nests
- Commonly nest in relatively small colonies close to other types of ants
- Indoors they nest in small cracks & crevices in woodwork & masonry
- Outdoors they nest in exposed soil, rotten wood, tree cavities and under objects
- Propagation
- Winged ants swarm and start new colonies throughout June to late fall
- Foraging
- Very defined foraging trails (for tiny ants)
- They typically enter buildings during hot and dry weather
- Their trails to the nests of the other ants they are raiding can be hard to find but check around to see what other ants you have - whatever and wherever they are, the thief ants are slowing their production by entering their nests using tiny tunnels (too small for the larger ants) and feeding on their young and immature
- Benefits
- They slow the production of other types of ant and insect by feeding on their immature stages of life
- How to Kill
- Use Maxforce Granular Bait
- Track down and bait every trail you can find
- Sprinkle bait around nesting sites - but not directly onto the nest
