Leaf Cutter Ants
- Size
- 1.5 mm to 13 mm (1/16th of an inch right up to 1/2 an inch)
- Color
- Dull dark brown or rusty brown
- Locations
- Texas and Louisianna (primarily South American ant)
- Eating Preferences
- Stinger
- Nests
- Nest in deep, dry, well-drained soil in mounds that look something like a crater you’d see on the moon
- Common nesting locations are at the side of roads, open fields and in shady areas near trees
- A colony can cover an area as small as a few square feet, but also, as it grows, an area up to an entire acre
- Foraging
- Foraging occurs primarily in the Fall (Autumn) during temperatures in the 45-80 degree range
- Many foraging trails are underground spreading out from the center of the nest
- Short and long above-ground trails are easily found between the nests and the trees/shrubs being "harvested"
- Fungus
- Leaf Cutter Ants collect leaves and return them to the nest so that they can grow fungus on them - Once established, it's not uncommon for them to strip an entire tree overnight
