Carpenter Ants
- Size
- 6mm to 15mm (1/4 inch to 5/8 of an inch)
- Color
- Eastern and Midwest States: Dull black color with long yellowish hairs - also found in a rusty color in the Eastern States
- Northern & Northeastern States and Southern Canada: Red
- Southeastern States: Red head and body with a darker color rear end
- Western States: Black body with deep red colored legs that are covered in yellowish hairs
- Hawaii and coastal Washington State: Yellow-brown colored

- Better eyesight than most ants
- Queen
- Most species of Carpenter Ant have just one queen but some species in the Western States have multiple queens per colony
- Nests
- Primarily nest in moist, decayed wood
- As nests grow that sometimes expand into healthy wood
- When houses have a Carpenter Ant infestation the MAIN colonies are usually located outside in tree hollows, holes or dead limbs and the nests inside are satellite nests
- Colonies in the Western States are typically 3-6 times the size of Carpenter Ant Colonies in the Eastern States
- Propagation
- Winged male and female Carpenter Ants swarm and start new colonies typically in late Spring and early Summer
- Foraging
- Long foraging trails regularly running over 300ft
- Most foraging activity occurs at night
- Carpenter Ants also sometimes forage alone
- How to Kill
- Use Maxforce Granular Bait
- Track down and bait every trail you can find
- Sprinkle bait around nesting sites - but not directly onto the nest
