Big Headed Ants
- Size
- 1.5 to 3.5 mm long (1/16th - 1/8th of an inch)
- Color
- Light brown to dark reddish brown
- Locations
- Eating Preferences
- Stinger
- Antennae
- First segment of antennae is very short in relation to the head
- Queen
- Multiple queens per colony
- Nests
- Most big headed ant nests are quite small
- Regularly many nests join together to make extended colonies
- Small mounds are made when nesting in the open
- Big Headed Ants prefer to nest in soil under stones, mulch, patio blocks, slabs etc
- Most nests are outside yet the ants venture inside
- Foraging
- Most trails found inside a building originate fom outside
- They readily construct mud tubes that resemble termite tubes
- Head Size
- The soldier ants have the large heads from which these ants get their name. Normal workers have slightly smaller heads.
- How to Kill
- Use Maxforce Granular Bait
- Track down and bait every trail you can find
- Sprinkle bait around nesting sites if you can find them - but not directly onto the nest
- A broadcast treatment of bait around the outside perimeter of your building is also required. Big-Headed Ants regularly make extended-colonies which make it unlikely you will find all colonies unless extremely patient and vigilant - and leaving one or more colonies un-targetted will result in reinfestation
