Ant Bait vs Spraying

Baiting ants and spraying ants are two completely different ant control methods.

Spraying kills the ants that come into contact with the spray.

Using ant bait enables you to use the foraging ants as your workers. They take the bait back to the nest to share with the other ants and this strategy ultimately wipes out the entire colony.

Baiting

With most types of ant, only 5-10% of the colony ever leaves the nest to forage for food.

Continual spraying around your home might kill off enough foraging workers to destroy the way the ant colony is supposed to work.
But it doesn't wipe out the colony altogether.

You sometimes see professional pest control guys spraying nests and this approach works when done correctly.
But training is required to know how large the underground section of nest is likely to be and how much spray to use for the calculated size of the nest and also simply in how best to approach and spray the nest.
The typical homeowner is highly unlikely to have the same success when spraying nests.

Where the average person can get the same results as the professionals is when they use a professional strength Ant Bait.
With commercial strength baits you have a weapon that the biting ants cannot resist.
They don't just eat it and be done with it either.
They take it back to the nest and share it out.
If you put out bait for long enough, you will destroy the entire colony.

The way baiting works.
  • They contain a very mild poison
  • Completely harmless to humans, cats & dogs
  • Lethal if you're the size of an ant
  • The ants eat it
  • Other workers are fed with regurgitated food
  • Larvae are fed with regurgitated food
  • The Queen is fed with regurgitated food
  • The regurgitation spreads the poison to more ants
  • The ants start toppling like dominos

It's the spreading and ant-powered sharing of the bait that does the damage to the colony.
You cannot achieve the same results with any spray yet developed.

And because you don't need to walk right up to the nest and risk disturbing the ants, anyone can control ants with this bait just by reading our ant baiting tips page.

If you have a large mound of ants and you walk calmly and quietly up to the nest, you sprinkle some bait around it but (not ON it).
If you walk too briskly some of the ants will leave and start their own colony.
If you sprinkle the bait on top of the mound the ants will panic and avoid the bait.
But AROUND the mound will work a treat.

Spraying

In contrast to baiting, spraying is best done by properly trained people.
But that doesn't mean you can't use the strategy to get instant results when you need them in a hurry.

If you stay away from the nests when you're out spraying you wont risk disturbing the ants enough to make them relocate their colony.

Spray along the edges of your house, around windows & doorways and around any cracks you find.
Be careful though not to disturb any nests adjacent to your foundation.
You can also spray along the baseboard inside your house.
Most sprays require a drying time during which you should keep your pets away from sprayed areas.

Spraying will instantly knock down the number of ants inside and the residue from the spray will kill ants that come along later (sometimes for up to 3 months dpending on the spray).
Some sprays also kill other pests, e.g. spiders and cockroaches.

Unless you're trained, however, we recommend not attempting to spray the nests themselves.
You risk dividing the colony into many new colonies that then establish themselves on and around your property, worsening your initial problem.

Combining Spraying with Baiting

If you opt to spray, we recommend only spraying inside and on the perimeter of your buildings.

That way you can add some ant bait to the remaining sections of the outdoor trails and use the remaining foragers as your poison delivery mechanism.

The spraying instantly wipes out the ants in and around your building.

And the baiting starts wiping out the rest of the colony/colonies.
